Proceeds from our scholarship fundraisers, combined with charitable contributions, bequests and endowments, have enabled us to offer educational assistance and scholarships to local women for over 100 years. Education is a key to equality.
In the past, AAUW members served as tutors to applicants seeking a career in public education. Tutors helped applicants, especially from minority communities, prepare for the Praxis test, required for a NJ Teaching Certificate. Our branch is committed to educational equity in our region.
In conjunction with Stockton University, Atlantic County AAUW sponsors the Children’s Theater held in the university’s performing arts center. Members serve as ushers at the performances that take place during the school year and in the summer. These performances provide much-needed cultural enrichment for local children.
In the past, in partnership with the Women’s Leadership Initiative, we support United Way’s “Ready! Set! Read!” program. Our volunteers went into low income preschool classrooms, read books, and then distributed copies for each child to take home and keep.
